Goldfields Business Benefits From Latest Round Of State Government RED Grant

Local Boulder business and Industry Link Media member Goldfields NDT, has received $195,000 from the latest round of the State Government Regional Economic Development Grants program. The Hon Alannah MacTiernan MLC was at Goldfields NDT to announce the latest funding this morning which also included $100,000 to develop the Coolgardie Innovation and Economic Development Centre in the old Coolgardie Post Office.

“We have today announced that we will be providing a grant of $195,000 to help provide this company (Goldfields NDT) now go to the next stage in their business. They will be able to double the size of their workforce because they will be expanding and being able to undertake a much bigger regime of testing services for the Mining industry. So that’s a great story for Kalgoorlie for creating jobs for in this company but its also about making mining in the Goldfields more cost effective” Minister MacTiernan said.

Goldfields NDT Director Dirk de Beer pinpointed the need to have a local facility to assist turnaround and provide something done elsewhere that could be achieved in the Goldfields. “This project started a couple of years ago and was a result of raising how much work was being sent to Perth, when it could be done locally except the facility wasn’t able to proved the service.” Mr de Beer said in relation to the development off a new facility.

“If its local, we get it done locally – we have a faster turnaround. Which means you get an answer quickly and mines can react quicker based on the information received. If we have to take it to Perth it can take from 2 days to up to three weeks.” Mr de Beer said.

The new facility for Goldfields NDT will be adjacent to Goldfields Highway and provide a striking statement to the South Boulder area and is on the cards to be up and running by the end of November pending approvals. For local Goldfields Esperance businesses keen to find out more about the RED grants, contact the Goldfields Esperance Development Commission.

Emeco Buys Out Pit N Portal

The acquisition of Pit N Portal this week by Emeco points to a healthy mining industry as we start the new year.  The deal worth $72 million sees $62 million cash change hands and $10 million worth of Emeco shares.

It is a highly strategic move by Emeco, that will see it move into the underground sector for the first time.  In particular, the Western Australian gold and nickel sector will see the major benefits from this acquisition.

Pit N Portal has grown into a large company over a short period of time and boasts more than 300 employees, mainly based in Western Australia, and a large asset base that boasts over 100 pieces of underground machinery.

Emeco’s move into the underground mining sector will be closely watched by other underground contractors who will be eyeing long-term contracts in the bullish gold sector and the promising rise in nickel’s fortunes.

Northern Star Donate Truck to TAFE

Northern Star Resources have again gone to great lengths to help the local TAFE give their diesel mechanic apprentices the best chance of learning on some of the latest technology.  The latest initiative from Northern Star Resources comes after last year donating a R2900G loader to kick-start the Mining Legends Charity Project, and separately to the TAFE a $250,000 Maintenance Technique custom designed drill training module. They also supplied training packages to the TAFE lecturers before the module’s installation.

This time they have donated a Sandvik TH551 truck with the latest in technology to help students learn best practice.  The truck, in its condition, is valued at approximately $200,000 so the size of the donation is considerable.

“Donating the machine was an easy decision,” Group Maintenance Manager for Northern Star Resources, Aaron Armstrong, said.  “In the long term we will see the benefits as better qualified apprentices come out of our local TAFE system.”

Realising that the full-size truck would take up too much space on the TAFE campus, Regal Engineering were commissioned to cut the truck down while all the time maintaining the integrity of the operating systems.  Regal were also required to manufacture skids to secure the machine to so that it could be moved, when required, in a simple way.

Daren Royle from Regal Engineering was equally enthusiastic.  “When Aaron first approached the company about this, I could immediately see the benefits for the students and what it would mean to be learning on a machine that had contemporary technology,” he said.  “The decision to be involved didn’t need much thought.”

At the time of publication, the machine is being readied for painting.

On hearing of the project, Sandvik, the manufacturer of the truck, donated the paint to return the truck to its original glory.  Of course, a business is required to do the painting and Force Equipment was quick to volunteer their Paint & Blast services.

Force Equipment Branch Manager, Jonothan Dark looks forward to their involvement.  “When talking to Aaron about this, his passion was contagious as was his logic.  It was an easy decision to make and Force Equipment are happy to be able to help apprentices increase their knowledge in this industry.”

However, before it can be painted it needs a thorough cleaning and Michael Worthington from Worthy Parts has allowed his new wash-pad to be used

“It didn’t take much persuasion for me to get involved in this project.  I wish I had something like this to work on when I was going through TAFE,” Michael Worthington said.  “Northern Star are setting a leading example to the mining industry, and the rest of the community.  Thanks also to Brendon Penn Crane Hire that will be getting it to and from our yard for the wash down.”

Central Regional TAFE Director of Training – Kalgoorlie, Chelsie Grace said the donation will provide additional training opportunities for students and really enhance the current training programs offered at TAFE across a number of areas.

“Practical training on equipment they can expect to work on when in the industry provides both pre-apprenticeship students and current apprentices with a huge advantage and invaluable experience” she said.

“The generosity of our local industry is one-of-a kind and this donation will really go a long way into better preparing our students for the workforce” she said.

“We really appreciate of all of the hard work that has gone into making this significant donation possible and for the further efforts in having it ready for us to start training students on” Mrs Grace said.

Once again goldfields’ mining companies and businesses have shown their generosity when it comes to practical and meaningful help.

WPIL EXPO 2019 Done and Dusted

It took months of planning by many people, hours to set up the stalls and have exhibitors bump in, yet it seemed to be over in a heartbeat.

But it was worth every effort that was made as we saw many exhibitors exchanging ideas, making deals and the public getting a glimpse of the service industries involved in the mining industry.

Thanks must go to all the exhibitors that made the effort to attend and present their business.  Many of the booths were spectacular and it was great to see exhibitors actively getting around and interacting with others.  I heard firsthand of local businesses doing deals with international companies and others making contact for the first time with potential customers.  Some exhibitors even found the human side of their competition and realised that they also face the same hurdles in business and the industry.

It was great to see the huge haul truck in the main marquee;  what a fantastic entry statement it was to set the tone for the rest of the exhibitors.  After school hours on Friday we had an influx of young children who were amazed at the size of it.  It was a huge hit with them.  Giant engines, drill rigs, pumps and all sorts of equipment were on display and it is a credit to the exhibitors who went to the effort to put their best foot forward.

The first evening a sundowner was put on for the exhibitors where the completed Mining Legends’ project was revealed.  It was a great evening and was a prelude to the Mining Legends’ gala dinner to be held after the expo.  Hop over to the Mining Legends’ website to read more about the project and the Worthy Parts’ website to read about what happened at the dinner.

Day two of the exhibition started with a breakfast where we were treated to Casey Stoner, Michael Patrizi and Jess Moore.  Casey spoke about his time as a two time MotoGP champion and life since then.  He told the audience that no matter how much talent you have it is the hard work that you put in that will make you succeed;  a message clearly not lost on the business people in the audience.  Michael did a great job of interviewing Casey and Jess and also spoke of his own time on the racing circuits.  Kalgoorlie raised and born, Jess Moore was great to listen to as she related her story from riding behind the tailings dams in Kalgoorlie to being crowned number one in New Zealand and currently ranked number two in Australia.

Unlike her male counterparts and despite her skill and success, Jess struggles for sponsorship but I am sure that there were people in the audience that were so impressed with the way she spoke that they will be considering helping her out.  Being parochial we wish our born and bred Kalgoorlie girl, Jess, all the best.

It was back to business at the expo after the breakfast and like day one the crowds came again to see what was happening.  Getting around and speaking to the exhibitors was a great way to find out the mood of the crowd and on the whole everyone was happy.  It was good to see competitions being conducted with the most unusual one being the boot throwing competition conducted by RSEA.  They made it a gold coin donation to compete and all money raised went to the Mining Legends’ project.  Other exhibitors also donated any proceeds from their competitions to the project.

The buzz around the place wasn’t just inside the expo.  A helicopter operated non stop to take people for a quick flight over the city and Superpit.  Many were surprised by the layout of the city and were in awe at how close the Superpit was to the city.

The auction got underway for the 150 items up for grabs.  From components to heavy machinery, the bidding was brisk and Ross’s Auctions did a great job getting through the catalogue.

Congratulations must go to Michael and Jaymi Worthington who had the vision to run the expo and auction.  They worked hard to achieve what they did and no one was more relieved than them when the expo finally got underway.

Finally, I must also congratulate those that supported them in their endeavours.  From the ladies in the office, the sales team and workshop boys, everyone worked hard to achieve what we did.  If I can single out one person for all their work it is Courtney Boyes, who for a person so young has shown maturity and a work ethic that would put many to shame.  Her tireless effort and knowledge of all things about the expo is greatly appreciated.

We hope to see you again at our next expo and appreciate your support for what was a great event.

Worthy Parts and Industry Link Media launch new platforms

Worthy Parts and Industry Link Media announce the launch of new web platforms leading into the 2019/20 financial year, as both companies work towards servicing the mining industry in their respective sectors.

Worthy Parts was founded in 2014, by Michael Worthington and wife Jaymi, after the mechanical workshop supervisor developed a business model aimed at minimising waste and catering to the growing demand of sourcing hard to find parts and machinery in the mining industry.

Michael’s business concept has focused on providing the mining industry with a website that would create opportunity for businesses to sell outdated stock, and source hard to find parts, as well as provide an opportunity for businesses to advertise their services.

During the growth of the Worthy Parts platform, Michael recognised the company’s requirement for more qualified staff members and has since grown the Worthy Parts team to include 9 trade qualified sales team members to aid with the industries growing needs.

Five years into the company’s growth, Michael and wife Jaymi released the much-anticipated redeveloped national services directory, with the aim to provide advertising opportunities to service providers working on ground level of the industry.

The cost-effective platform grew from January of 2019 and provided enough evidence to demonstrate the industry’s need for further developed media platforms aimed at the service sector.

Industry Link Media bridges the location gap between service providers across Australia, whilst still focusing on the promotional opportunities first boasted in the concept of the original business model.

The 12-month growth of the Industry Link Media platform saw the development and implementation of the inaugural WPIL Auction & Expo in 2018.

It was at the success of the first series of networking events that Michael and Jaymi made the decision to split the two companies, in order to continue servicing clients at a high capacity in the different aspects of the sector.

The media outlet aims to provide advertising opportunities at cost effective prices, for the services sector of the mining industry via a directory, news outlet and social media strategies specialised at providing resourceful information to the industry.

The launch of the new platforms formalises the division of the two companies comes at the announcement of the groups relocation from its Broadwood street workshop in Kalgoorlie, to a larger premises that will cater to its workshop requirements, freight and transport requirements and provide the Industry Link Media an office location to work with clients.

With the Worthy Parts brand expanding rapidly past the borders of Australia, catering to the international market, and the announcement of the second WPIL Auction & Expo, Michael recognised the needs for both companies to have their own identity.

“The two brands have successfully worked hand in hand as the growth

of Industry Link Media over the past 12 months was backed by the

already established Worthy Parts brand”.

“What we recognised is that the Industry Link Media outlet could provide clients around Australia with an opportunity to have their business put on display in a physical and digital arena”.

The Worthy Parts brand works to source hard to sell and source parts or machinery across mining sectors globally and requires its own identity to do just that.

The division will become official as of July 1st, with the relocation of the companies into a bigger premise whereby they’ll be able to service both sets of clients and their requirements.

Worthy Parts has continued with a fast growth with the introduction of teams and offices in the east coast and in Perth.

Both companies are now recognised in their respective sectors within the mining industries and the formal announcement will be made at the 2019 WPIL Auction & Expo.
