Founded in 2000 as Sweeney’s Mechanical Services, SMS provided maintenance, refurbishment, sales and service support for heavy duty earthmoving. In 2007, rental hire services were added to the portfolio and the company’s name changed to SMS Rental, before evolving to SMS Innovative Mining Solutions.
In 2016, the contract mining division was formed to deliver an end-to-end service offering to the surface mining sector. SMS Mining Services (as it is now known as) has the unique ability to work under different contract models with the capability to deliver fleet rental, repairs, maintenance and contract mining.
Today, SMS Mining Services is a part of a much larger and stronger group of companies. In October 2018, we announced a major milestone for the business – the merger with Rivet. Rivet is an Australian provider of specialised transport and logistics solutions. Collectively, the Group has approximately 1,300 employees, across 15 locations and a presence in five states nationally.

Danny is the founding director of SMS Mining Services. He has four decades of experience working in the civil and mining sectors with extensive experience in mechanical, marine, civil and mining engineering and maintenance. Danny started the business as Sweeney’s Mechanical Services in 1998 before transforming it to the company it is today in SMS Mining Services. He has been integral in not only building the company but setting the standard around safety, quality and service. He brings with him practical grass roots experience having held various repairs and maintenance positions across a number of West Australian mining projects, and across a diverse range of commodities. Danny holds qualifications as a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic and Industrial Machinist.
Tony has more than 25 years’ experience in the mining sector. Prior to joining SMS as CEO in 2014, he held the positions of CFO, Executive Director and Company Secretary in HSE Mining. Tony holds a Masters of Business Administration, CPA, Post Graduate Diploma in Corporate Governance, Master’s Degree in Strategic Business Management and is a Graduate of the Australian Institutes of Company Directors.
Shaun joined SMS in 2007 bringing over 13 years’ of practical experience in open pit mining, engineering, transport and asset management. He has been integral in building the operations of the SMS and is responsible for both planning and operational strategy and the successful delivery of client projects. He has a strong hands-on approach with practical experience in both the rental and maintenance and mining services areas, across a diverse range of commodities. Shaun holds a Diploma of Project Management and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
David commenced work at SMS in 2007. He has over 25 years’ experience in financial management and accounting, of which he has spent significant time in the mining and engineering sectors. David holds his CPA, Master of Business Administration and is a member of the Chartered Secretaries Australia and Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is also currently completing a Masters of Mineral Economics.
Stephen joined SMS in 2013. He has been integral in leading the maintenance division to a position that is respected for its high standards in equipment reliability and service. During Stephen’s time at SMS he has held multiple positions including Heavy Duty Mechanic, Maintenance Coordinator and notably his recent appointment to General Manager of Maintenance. With over eight years’ experience in heavy machinery maintenance and repair, Stephen brings with him hands-on experience with a meticulous and pragmatic approach in maintenance and rebuilds. Stephen has completed his apprenticeship as a heavy diesel mechanic and is a graduate of the Senior Managers Program.
Martin is a highly experienced mining professional with more than 30 years’ experience in greenfield and brownfield operations. His experience spans both soft and hard rock mining operations across a number of commodities. Martin’s experience spans from operational start up to closures. He is highly experienced in driving change and delivering improved business results. He has held a number of Project Management roles in BCG, Theiss, Macmahon and Eastern Guruma. Martin joined SMS in 2018. He holds a Graduate Diploma of Mining and Diplomas of Metalliferous Mining, Business and Management. Martin is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and holds a Quarry Manager’s Certificate of Competency.
Mike has over 30 years’ experience in fleet management and maintenance operating and managing diverse fleets in Western Australia and nationally. He has previously owned and operated an equipment rental fleet based in the Goldfields before selling to a larger competitor. His experience includes working with over-sized transport requirements and compliance, management of a national earthmoving rental division, as well as open pit maintenance. Mike joined SMS in 2015 and leads the rental division ensuring its smooth daily operations, while complying to operational and safety objectives. He works collaboratively with our clients from quotation through to the delivery of a high level of service meeting contractual and support requirements. Mike holds a Certificate 111 in Automotive Service and Repair and a Diploma in Management.
Stuart has over 35 years’ experience as a Mine Manager managing large mining operations and on-site technical services departments. Stuart’s experience spans multiple commodities including coal, bauxite, copper, nickel, cobalt and iron ore. Joining SMS in 2018, Stuart is responsible for the overall management of contract mining operations. His responsibilities include safety and operational performance, planning, budgeting, staffing, cost containment and overall project profitability. He is a strong advocate of safe production and is committed to driving efficiencies and creating an inclusive workplace. Stuart brings to SMS deep industry experience having worked for companies such as Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, Anglo America, Worsley Alumina, WMC Resources, OM Group and Mount Gibson Iron. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil), Quarry Managers Certificate of Competency and is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM).
Terry’s career spans over 40 years in the human resources, OHS and environmental management areas. He has successfully led a diversity of projects and process improvement within the resources, industrial and transport sectors. Terry joined SMS in 2014 and leads the HR, Quality and Training portfolios for SMS. He holds Diplomas in OHS and Business Management, with additional training in project management, industrial relations, performance management and human resources. Terry is also a certified Internal Auditor for ISO9001 and ISO 140001.
